What is Dry Needling Acupuncture?

Acupuncture New Sudbury ChiropracticDr. Brandon Jones has completed an integrated dry needling course, which focuses primarily on the Western Medical Acupuncture approach for the management of musculoskeletal pain and injuries.

This approach involves inserting thin needles into trigger points (tight and tender muscles). The needles may remain in the muscles for a short period of time (5 to 15min) during a dry needling session. Electro-acupuncture (electrical stimulation of the needles) may also be included to elicit a small muscle contraction in order to further relieve tightness.

Dry needling can help improve blood flow and thus nutrients to the sight of insertion. Additionally, biochemical changes take place within the target region to help promote healing. With chronic pain, dry needling can help decrease the nociceptive (pain sensation) messaging that takes place between the central and peripheral nervous systems.

This form of treatment can be included as an adjunct to chiropractic care. Various conditions can be treated with dry needling acupuncture, including the following;

  • Shoulder impingement
  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
  • AC joint irritation
  • Lateral and medial epicondylosis
  • Various foot and ankle conditions (plantar fasciosis, metatarsalgia etc…)
